Screening for Oral Cancers
TESTING FOR CANCER RISK
Of all oral abnormalities, a top concern is early detection of oral cancers. Oral cancers claim one life every hour in the United States. This has not changed in 40 years.
Typical risk factors associated with this disease are tobacco, alcohol use and being over 40. Unfortunately, 45% of patients diagnosed with oral cancers do not have any of these risk factors. And new research has shown that 90% of oral cancers are linked to the HPV virus. Today, we have the ability to test for the HPV virus with just a saliva sample.
SCREENING FOR ORAL CANCERS/ABNORMALITIES
At Live Well Dental, we also use the latest in cancer screening technology. Early detection with the VELscope® leads to more treatment options, potentially less invasive or radical treatments and better patient outcomes.
The VELscope® Vx Enhanced Oral Assessment System centers on a wireless, handheld scope used to identify oral mucosal abnormalities – often months or even years before they can be identified with the unassisted eye. Early detection of oral cancers can improve your survival rate from only 50% to well over 90%.
